Orthopedic Surgery
Orthopedic surgery relates to the repair of joint and bone problems and is usually a large component of any veterinary surgical practice. Dr. Hay has a special interest in knee problems and in particular rupture of the cranial cruciate ligament. In people this ligament is known as the anterior cruciate ligament or “ACL”. Dr. Hay performs several types of knee surgeries for cranial cruciate disease including, but not limited to: tibial tuberosity advancement (TTA), tibial plateau leveling osteotomy (TPLO) and cranial cruciate ligament extracapsular repair (CCL). After a chronic knee injury or with chronic orthopedic leg/knee problems dogs can develop severe disabling arthritis of the knee joint. To treat this problem, total knee replacements have recently become possible in dogs. Dr. Hay has an interest in joint replacements and is currently one of a few surgeons in the United States performing canine knee replacements. Dr. Hay has experienced much success with his total knee replacements and takes pleasure in seeing his patients lead a more pain free life after surgery. Dr. Hay also performs hip replacements with good success.
Broken bones or fractures are common problems in pets. Dr. Hay performs many fracture repairs every year ranging from “green stick” fractures to complex fractures associated with crushing injuries.
Soft Tissue Surgery
Soft tissue surgeries commonly performed by Dr. Hay include, but are not limited to various cancer removals, ear surgery for incurable infections (TECA), liver surgery for congenital shunts, urological surgery and hernia surgery. A surgery of particular interest to Dr. Hay is surgery for hyperparathyroidism, caused by an overactive parathyroid gland in the neck that regulates calcium.
Neurological Surgery
Neurological surgery relates to the treatment of spine and brain problems. Dr. Hay performs several types of spinal surgery, including but not limited to, disc decompressions for herniated vertebral discs, hemilaminectomies and ventral slots. Dr. Hay does not perform brain surgery but can make referrals to neurological surgeons who do perform brain surgery.
